2008 Boys Basketball Rankings... NorCal Scouting Report

1

Drew Gordon
Mitty, San Jose

Post

6-9

One of the most athletic 4 men in the country. Blessed with a body like Karl Malone, Gordon plays above the rim. While he is an elite prospect, his skills have not caught up with his athleticism. His mid-range game is non-existent and his post moves have not improved since his frosh year. Right now, he is a run and jump athlete with 2 years to get it together but has the size and athleticism to remain ay No. 1 for now.

2

Elston Turner
Roseville High

CG

6-4

WA

One of the more complete guards in the state. The son of former NBA player and coach Elston Turner Sr., Turner is a natural, who can play either the 1 or 2. A very good shooter with a nice feel for the game and the ability to take over games. The only issue is foot speed and vertical movement, which will make it difficult for Turner to defend at the high-major level.

3

DJ Seely
Tokay, Lodi

WF

6-5

A long and athletic two-guard who has the ability to score in bunches. Seely has a good feel for the game and when he is focused, he is hard to stop. Strength is an issue, as well as ballhandling and he shoots off-balance at times. A good looking prospect who is a solid high mid-major.

4

Chris Jones
Newark Memorial High

CG

6-3

Jones is a Demarcus Nelson clone as one of the most complete guards in Northern California. A physical specimen who plays all facets of the game, he can rebound, defend and score. Jones can play either guard spot, but he is strongest at the shooting guard position, where he uses his strength to get to the basket. Arguably the best defender in this class. The only weakness in his game is shooting touch, which is improving.

5

Frank Otis
McClymonds, Oakland

CF

6-6

A strong and physical combo forward who has a game similar to Modesto Christian and Kentucky standout Chuck Hayes. Otis is a strong rebounder, who has the ability to score in transition and make plays with his good passing. He has been hampered by injuries for most of his high school career, but he is starting to put it together. The primary weakness in his game is shooting.

6

Collin Chiverton
Mitty, San Jose

SG

6-5

A big shooting guard who has the ability to knock down jumpers from anywhere and eamed with Drew Gordon, Chiverton will get a lot of open looks. His length makes him a solid rebounder and defender. Chiverton's weaknesses are his handle, which have improved and he tends to settle for the jumper too much, instead of attacking to the basket. Chiverton has steadily improved over the years and this trend should continue based on his strong work ethic.

7

Tyree McCrary
Oak Grove, San Jose

WF

6-8

An athletic wing, who is long and athletic. McCrary is a good rebounder, whose offensive game is very raw. He has a limited understanding of the game and he needs to improve his footwork and strength, but he can shoot the jump shot. Tremendous upside.

8

Will Brew
St. Mary's, Berkeley

PG

6-3

Brew is a big combo guard whose game is reminiscent of former Hercules High standout John Winston. Brew's strength is his ability to run a team, and his defensive prowess, which can take out a team's best offensive player. His weaknesses are decision-making and shooting, which is erratic, but it has improved from last year.

9

Damon Warren
El Cerrito High

Post

6-8

An athletic big man who is a very good rebounder, Warren is effective in the post. His main weakness is lack of coordination which hinders his game right now but we fully expect him to fully realize his potential once his skills catch up to his body.

10

James Albright
Fremont, Oakland

SF

6-6

A power wing, with a solid jump shot out to 20 feet, Albright is a tweener, stuck between the 3 and 4. He is a good rebounder who has a motor and plays hard all the time. His handles are suspect and he has trouble beating defenders off the dribble but once he gets in the paint, he can score against bigger defenders as he uses his strength and athleticism around the basket to good advantage.
